Huntington Beach Police Officer Shot in Badge

Shooting breaking news is one of my favorite parts of my job. If I am covering a story it is usually somebodies worst day of their life. On occasion I get to cover stories like this which involves just a pure miracle. The night was pretty slow when over the radios I hear that Huntington Beach Police are in a pursuit of a suspect. All of a sudden you hear an officer on the radio yelling shots fired. My adrenaline kicks in as a start driving towards the location of the pursuit. After a couple of minutes I hear over the radio that an officer has been shot. Now my adrenaline is through the roof. As I arrive on scene to where the officer has been shot, I learn that the officer had been shot in the badge and it deflected the round and saved his life. He had some minor cuts from glass from the windshield but overall was unhurt. As the pursuit zooms past me again I get back in my vehicle and continue the chase. We started on the Southbound 405 Freeway near Harbor Boulevard then transferred onto the Northbound 55 Freeway to the Eastbound 91 Freeway and then onto the Northbound 15 Freeway. The suspect was driving between 100 and 130mph throughout the pursuit. About an hour into the pursuit I hear over the radio that the suspect has crashed off the embankment at Cleghorn Road on the Northbound 15 Freeway. As I pull up to the scene I see the suspects vehicle completely engulfed in flames. The suspect was burned to death in his vehicle.

A Huntington Beach Police officer is checked out by Costa Mesa Fire after being shot in his badge during a vehicle pursuit of a suspect. The pursuit ended on the Northbound 15 Freeway when the suspect lost control of his vehicle at Cleghorn Road bursting into flames and killing him around 1:30 a.m. Friday morning in San Bernardino County.

The fast-moving Blue Cut Fire, has burned over 30,000 acres in the San Bernardino National Forest and has forced more than 82,000 people to evacuate. A lot of homes, structures and vehicles have been lost in this fire. This is by far one of the craziest wildfires I have covered. This fire started around the 15 Freeway in the Cajon Pass area on Tuesday and has spread to Lytle Creek, Highway 138 into the Oakhill area as well as Wrightwood. Images have been published in The Wall Street Journal, BuzzFeed, NBC, Press Reader, Orange County Register and many more.
